US consumer safety watchdog to investigate latest fire incident involving safe Samsung Galaxy Note 7

Shortly after it came to light that a safe Samsung Galaxy Note 7 unit caught fire on a plane in the US, the countrys Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has confirmed that it will launch a probe into the incident.

"CPSC is moving expeditiously to investigate this incident," said the agencys chairman Elliott F. Kaye.

He also said that their staff has already reached out to the FAA and Samsung to know more about the incident, and will also get in touch with the owner of the phone.

"I want to reiterate my call for consumers who have the recalled Galaxy Note 7 to keep their smartphones powered down and to immediately take advantage of the remedies being offered by Samsung. Consumers should know that one of the remedies is a refund."

For its part, Samsung said the company will only be in a position to share anything after they get access to the device. "Until we are able to re trieve the device, we cannot confirm that this incident involves the new Note 7," a spokesperson for the tech giant said.

"We are working with the authorities and Southwest now to recover the device and confirm the cause. Once we have examined the device we will have more information to share."

New Samsung Galaxy J7 2016 update in India brings Pay Mini support

Samsung has started pushing out a new update to its Galaxy J7 (2016) smartphone in India. Weighing in at around 135MB, the update carries a firmware version of J710FXXU3AQF6, and brings a handful of changes.

The key upgrade is the added support for Pay Mini, which is a stripped down version of the companys mobile payments service Samsung Pay. Android security fixes for the month of June are also included.

Finally, the update also brings some stability-related improvements and bug fixes. Given the fact that its an OTA roll out, it might take time for the update to hit your device.

Microsoft Lumia 550 drops to 60 for a limited time

If you are in the US and are in the market for a budget Windows 10-powered smartphone, heres a deal for you: the Microsoft Lumia 550 is currently going for as low as $60 in the country.

Retailer B&H Photo is selling the device (both black and white variants) at this rate. However, keep in mind that the discount is on the international variants for the phone, although they should work fine on GSM networks in the US.

The deal is available only for a limited time - around 14 hours as of writing. So if you are interested in availing it, you may have to act fast.

For those who arent aware, Microsoft is also selling the handset (US variant) at discounted rate - $99. That deal ends October 9.

LG now teases the G6s camera UI and square image capture mode

A couple of days ago LG put out a press release detailing some of the features (and specs) for its upcoming G6s three cameras (of which two are on the back). At that point the company mentioned that there will be a new camera UI featured in the G6, complete with a unique square capture mode. This will take full advantage of the handsets 2:1 screen aspect ratio by showing you two square pictures or videos side by side, because they fit perfectly.

Not being able to contain its excitement about this prospect and what it means for easy media posting to Instagram (even though the social network has had support for non-square pictures for a while now), LG has outed the video you can see below.

So the companys endless teaser campa ign for the G6 continues, ahead of its unveiling this Sunday, on February 26, at an event in Barcelona. LG is in fact providing some competition to the various leaks and rumors about the G6 that have popped up recently. Speaking of which, just a few hours ago some neat press renders of the handset got leaked, showing it in black.

SD625 powered Motorola XT1635 spotted on GeekBench alleged to be Moto Z Play

A new Motorola device has been spotted on GeekBench benchmarking website. Carrying a model number of XT1635-01, the device is powered by Snapdragon 625 chipset with octa-core 2.02GHz processor.

The listing also reveals a couple of other key specs, including 3GB of RAM and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The phone is alleged to be the Moto Z Play, which was expected to be unveiled alongside the Moto Z and Moto Z Force last week, but was absent from the event.

Some of the rumored specs of the Z Play include 5.5-inch 1080p touchscreen, 16 MP rear and 5 MP front camera, as well as 3,600mAh battery. The phone is said to be just 5.9mm thick.

Samsung Galaxy S6 running Nougat receives WiFi certification

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge smartphones are all set to receive the Nougat update as a device with model number SM-G920V and Android version 7.0 has been certified by the WiFi Alliance (WFA).

While the SM-G920 series is for the Galaxy S6, its reasonable to assume that a Nougat-powered edge variant will also receive the certification sooner than later.

The Nougat update for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge is already rolling out, and the South Korean company has also announced a list of other devices that will be getting Nougat in H1 2017. The list includes the S6, S6 edge, the original A-series, as well as a few tablets.
